Influence over authority

One of the first shifts in senior leadership is realising that the people you need most may not report to you. You can’t instruct them. You can’t performance-manage them. You can’t simply escalate when they disagree.

The most common mistake when you need to create movement without control, is trying to compensate for the absence of authority by becoming more forceful or more involved.

But influence works differently. People move when they understand why it matters to them, not simply why it matters to you. So, make it explicit. Before asking someone to support your agenda, figure out the answer to one question: “Why should this matter to them?”

Don’t assume alignment. Find the intersection between what you need and what they care about, because influence begins with curiosity, not command.
