11:11 Tuesdays by Vaishali Wagle October 13, 2026 Happy 11:11 Tuesdays Reader, Here are 1 Thought, 1 Quote, 1 Word and 1 Humour for you to reflect upon this week. 1.ThoughtWhen a measure becomes a target, it can stop being a good measure. This is Goodhart’s Law —and one of the most consequential traps in management. Why it happens? The problem isn’t measurement. Leaders need metrics. The problem begins when the metric becomes the mission. Because people are remarkably good at delivering what gets rewarded—even when it isn’t what the organisation truly needs. For example: Set a target for quick resolution of customer queries, and people may optimise the score rather than the experience. Measure productivity, and activity can become more important than outcomes. Reward revenue, and the cost may eventually show up somewhere else. How to Prevent It? Use Paired Indicators: Balance a metric with an opposing check (e.g., tie a speed or quantity target to a strict quality or customer satisfaction target). Diversify Metrics: Rely on a balanced scorecard or a mix of qualitative and quantitative data instead of a single KPI. Treat Metrics as Diagnostics: View numbers as helpful clues to investigate rather than rigid quotas that must be hit at all costs What behaviour are your metrics rewarding that your organisation may not actually want? #LeadershipLab: Free training video on How to become executive ready 1.Quote“Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.” 1.WordDistortion (n) The act of changing something so that it looks, sounds, or means something different from its true or original state. Nobody aligned. That is the essence of the Abilene Paradox. It happens in leadership teams more often than we like to admit. Someone proposes a direction. Everyone nods. Nobody raises a concern. The meeting ends with “agreement.” And then, people leave the room with different reservations, interpretations,...

Thought Influence over authority One of the first shifts in senior leadership is realising that the people you need most may not report to you. You can’t instruct them. You can’t performance-manage them. You can’t simply escalate when they disagree. The most common mistake when you need to create movement without control, is...
