People assume it's the result of long hours, demanding stakeholders, endless meetings across timezones, or ambitious goals. Many senior leaders I have coached have uncovered that burnout is often a values misalignment, not workload issue. Exhaustion was a signal and not a weakness. Burnout often begins when you continue carrying responsibilities, expectations, or ambitions that no longer fit the person you are becoming. You say yes to projects that no longer energise you. The exhaustion isn't always physical, it's the fatigue that comes from spending too much time disconnected from what matters most. Sometimes burnout is not asking you to do less, it is asking you to do what is more aligned.
